I highly recommend
The Chronological Study Bible.
Its re-arranged according to the historical order of the events in the Bible. It is fascinating and so easy to follow. You literally just open the front cover and start reading. I am about 3/4 of the way through the Old Testament. Everything just falls into place and makes so much more sense! Of course, the long detailed, historical background and comments help too.
I still sometimes get bogged down in parts- But I'm plowing through (I am pretty sure I'll never make it out of Kings I and II. Just when I think its behind me a few more chapters pop up else where. These two books are scattered over 400 pages!)
I'm doing the one year reading plan. But, I'm ahead of myself. According to the plan, Its July.
This is also helpful:
The Teacher's Bible Commentary.
It explains every chapter in short paragraphs. Not an in depth Bible Study, Just tells you what you just read and where it fits into the bigger picture of what is going on.
